Monitor and maintain automotive equipment

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

This unit describes the performance outcomes required to monitor and maintain tools, equipment and machinery in an automotive environment.

It involves monitoring the tools, equipment and machinery during operation, performing minor maintenance, and applying preventative maintenance procedures.

It applies to those in an automotive and related component manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a production worker level.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section

1. Monitor operation

1.1 Operation of tools, equipment and machinery is monitored in line with work health and safety (WHS) requirements to ensure they are performing according to job requirements and operator instructions

1.2 Processes relevant to the task are monitored according to manufacturer specifications, workplace instructions and procedures

2. Perform minor maintenance

2.1 Minor maintenance is performed on tools, equipment and machinery according to manufacturer specifications, workplace procedures and WHS requirements

2.2 Maintenance requirements outside the range of operator expertise or responsibility are reported to appropriate personnel, according to workplace procedures

3. Apply preventative maintenance

3.1 Tools, equipment and machinery used in the manufacturing process are checked according to workplace and manufacturer preventative maintenance procedures

3.2 Identified requirements of tools, equipment and machinery are reported to appropriate personnel according to workplace procedures

4. Complete monitoring and maintenance procedures

4.1 Equipment, tools, machinery and work areas are cleaned and maintained according to workplace procedures

4.2 Faulty or damaged tools, equipment and machinery are identified, tagged and reported according to workplace procedures

4.3. Workplace documentation and equipment maintenance reports are completed according to workplace procedures

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Monitored must include:

checking for abnormal operation of equipment, tools or machinery

checking quality of products during the manufacturing process

standardised workplace preventative maintenance schedules.

Tools, equipment and machinery must include:

hand, power and air tools

production assembly equipment.

Minor maintenance must include:

visual inspections

pre-start checks

shutdown checks

removing and replacing parts or components.

Workplace procedures must include:

continuous improvement programs

operation of tools, equipment and machinery

WHS requirements

workplace instructions.

Preventative maintenance procedures must include:

maintaining or replacing consumables

making minor adjustments

providing feedback on ways to improve equipment maintenance

recorded regular inspections.

Requirements must include:

adjustment

cleaning

modification

repair

replacement

servicing.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
