Apply continuous improvement in automotive manufacturing

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the performance outcomes required to apply continuous improvement systems and processes to products and processes in an automotive manufacturing environment.

It involves the application of skills and knowledge at a production worker level.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section

1. Prepare for continuous improvement

1.1 Quality requirements are identified and applied

1.2 Manufacturing systems and processes are identified from workplace instructions

2. Apply continuous improvement

2.1 Continuous improvement tools and problem-solving techniques relevant to the process are identified and applied

2.2 Proposed improvements to processes are trialled, monitored and evaluated

2.3 Waste minimisation principles and processes are identified

2.4 Recommendations are made according to workplace procedures

3. Monitor continuous improvement

3.1 Continuous improvement requirements are monitored to ensure products and processes comply with workplace quality

3.2 Workplace continuous improvement systems and processes are monitored on an ongoing basis to capitalise on identified opportunities

3.3 Continuous improvement forms and work sheets are completed according to workplace procedures

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Systems and processes mustinclude:

assembly sequence

batch building

established continuous improvement system, such as Kaizen or workplace equivalent

lean manufacturing processes

picking of parts, restocking and quality inspections.

Continuous improvement tools must include:

balanced scorecards

benchmarking

cause and effect diagrams

fishbone diagram or workplace equivalent

lead time

performance measurement

plan-do-check-act (PDCA) or workplace equivalent

run charts

statistics

upstream and downstream customer feedback.

Problem-solving techniques must include:

step-by-step process

use of measurement.

Waste must include:

excess inventory and stock

excessive cycle time

activities that do not value add

over-processing

rejects

rework.

Workplace procedures must include:

quality processes for ensuring that built-in quality requirements are met

standardisation

work health and safety (WHS) requirements

workplace instructions.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
