Bond and repair fibreglass components

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the performance outcomes required to bond and repair components using fibreglass reinforced plastics (FRP) techniques.

It applies to those in an automotive and related component manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a specialist level.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section

1. Plan the job

1.1 Items to be bonded and repaired are identified from work orders

1.2 FRP materials and equipment are identified, selected and prepared

1.3 Component surface area is calculated and FRP materials are prepared

1.4 Required quantities of gel-coat, resins, catalyst and matting are calculated

1.5 Correct set-up and facilities of ventilated work area are confirmed and faults and non-compliances are reported

2. Bond and repair components

2.1 Workplace procedures are identified and followed

2.2 FRP edges and surfaces are prepared according to workplace procedures

2.3 FRP materials are mixed in approved containers

2.4 FRP materials are applied according to workplace procedures

2.5 Components are finished according to workplace quality procedures

3. Complete work processes

3.1 Equipment is cleaned and stored according to workplace procedures

3.2 Work area is cleaned, and waste materials are disposed of or recycled according to workplace procedures

3.3 Completed FRP component is checked against job specifications

3.4 Workplace documents are completed according to procedures

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Materials and equipment must include:

catalyst

FRP specialist tools

gel-coats and pigments

measuring equipment for bonding and repairing fibreglass components

mixing containers for bonding and repairing fibreglass components

reinforced matting

release agents

resins.

Workplace procedures must include:

use of FRP equipment

WHS requirements to bond and repair fibreglass components.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
