This unit applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments who develop and use simple databases to store and retrieve data. They may provide administrative support within an enterprise, or may be independently responsible for the storage and retrieval of data relating to their own work roles.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to create simple two table relational databases with reports and queries, for the storage and retrieval of information.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate

review of authenticated documents from the workplace or training environment

demonstration of techniques.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Run reports and queries to check that results and formulae provide the required data 
Modify reports to include or exclude additional requirements 
Ensure data input meets designated time lines and organisational requirements for speed and accuracy 
Use manuals, user documentation and online help to overcome problems with database design and production 
Preview, adjust and print database reports or forms in accordance with organisational and task requirements 
Name and store databases, in accordance with organisational requirements, and exit application without data loss or damage 
Prepare and distribute reports to appropriate person in a suitable format
