This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install or upgrade broadcasting equipment and facilities.

It applies to individuals who work under direction using well-developed skills to analyse and evaluate information as well as plan and manage work requirements. Occasionally they may be expected to work with minimum supervision or to be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for installation

1.1 Confirm installation requirements with reference to system drawings and specifications in consultation with relevant personnel

1.2 Seek out additional information and report problems where there are deficiencies in specifications following enterprise procedures

1.3 Identify functionality of existing equipment and equipment to be installed

1.4 Power-up and run performance tests to systems prior to installation

1.5 Test cabling and check it is working to required specifications and capacity

1.6 Test transmission for signal quality

1.7 Check tools and equipment to ensure they are in safe working order and adjusted to manufacturer’s specifications

2. Install or upgrade equipment

2.1 Safely install equipment in accordance with specifications and timelines, taking extra care with static sensitive and fragile equipment

2.2 Place, secure and terminate a range of cables correctly, as required

2.3 Organise and monitor cabling and equipment in compliance with industry regulations and standards

2.4 Minimise interruption to existing service during equipment installation

2.5 Use appropriate connections and connectors to connect equipment into the broadcast system

2.6 Accurately test system performance to achieve valid results

2.7 Check equipment is operational and aligned, and make adjustments as required

2.8 Report instances of equipment non-compliance or malfunction following enterprise procedures

4.5 Return system drawings and specifications to approved location on completion of work

Evidence of the ability to:

interpret and confirm requirements from installation specifications

safely install or upgrade a range of equipment in a broadcast facility within specified timelines

conduct system performance tests before and after installation of equipment

program system features and document changes

finalise job in accordance with environmental standards and client requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe the features of test measurement equipment used when installing or upgrading broadcast equipment

outline industry regulations, standards and certification requirements relevant to the installation of broadcast equipment and facilities

describe processes used to program broadcast systems and align technical equipment

outline the precautions for handling static-sensitive or fragile equipment

describe procedures to safely dispose of obsolete equipment

identify work health and safety requirements as they relate to equipment installation procedures.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

broadcast facility and equipment

drawings, specifications, supplier manuals and other information relevant to broadcast equipment and systems

regulatory information.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
