This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install camera infrastructure for television and other relatively complex multi-camera productions such as live sport or entertainment events.

It applies to individuals who work under supervision to rig cabling and dolly tracks according to predetermined camera plans.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for cable rigs

1.1 Confirm cabling requirements for shoots with production personnel and select appropriate camera cables

1.2 Repair minor cable faults safely and in line with manufacturer's instructions

1.3 Refer complex repairs to technical specialists in line with enterprise procedures

1.4 Complete workplace documentation in line with enterprise requirements

1.5 Check camera cables are operational and ready for use on location

2. Rig camera cables

2.1 Check available power source is appropriate

2.2 Confirm cable points and cable runs from camera plans and other cabling information

2.3 Establish cable points, runs and lengths to meet anticipated camera movements, taking care to minimise cable cross-overs

2.4 Lay out excess cable to avoid knotting or twisting during use

2.5 Run power cables from power source to cameras and other equipment

2.6 Secure cables to avoid strain on plugs and sockets

2.7 Complete cable routing and patching to camera control units, cable slinging and cable ramping safely, and in line with camera plans

2.8 Check camera cables are run from correct outlet points to cameras and do not impede movement of cameras during shoots

2.9 Check installed camera cables do not present a hazard to personnel involved in shoots or to the general public

3. Lay tracks for dolly mounts

3.1 Position tracks according to production requirements and confirm final positioning with production staff

3.2 Lay tracks safely, taking account of ground conditions and site safety plans

3.3 Check tracks are placed without risk to production personnel, and are smooth, level and secure throughout their route

3.4 Check tracks do not intrude on proposed shots and allow free movement of camera equipment and personnel

3.5 Secure dolly to track and check fastenings

4. Disassemble camera cables and dolly tracks

4.1 Break down cabling and coil or wind cables onto drums to avoid strain or damage

4.2 Use safe lifting techniques when breaking down and carrying track equipment

4.3 Report equipment damage to relevant production staff and complete required documentation

4.4 Clean and safely pack equipment and prepare for transport

4.5 Leave locations in original or improved condition

check cables are safe and ready for use prior to location shoots

lay out cables and connect them safely to cameras and power sources according to camera plans

safely lay tracks for moving dollies during shoots

disassemble camera equipment and accessories at the conclusion of shoots

work collaboratively with others before and during location shoots.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of camera and lighting personnel

describe typical problems that can arise in the context of rigging camera infrastructure

explain compatibility issues in relation to different types of video cameras, cables, connectors and power sources

describe safe procedures that apply to handling cables and dolly tracks

describe duty of care considerations to colleagues and the general public for individuals responsible for rigging camera infrastructure.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

productions which require rigging of camera infrastructure

camera cables and dolly tracks

camera plans

interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
