This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply art finishing to items used in productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.

At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Criteria

1. Determine art finishing requirements

1.1 In consultation with relevant personnel, plan art finishing tasks according to production requirements

1.2 Liaise with relevant personnel to ensure that art finishing tasks meet design specifications and any amendments to design are approved before work proceeds

1.3 Select appropriate methods of art finishing through experimentation and testing of techniques

1.4 Select and source materials according to production requirements

2. Undertake the art finishing process

2.1 Prepare appropriate tools and materials for chosen art finishing methods and treatments

2.2 Use tools and materials safely during the art finishing process

2.3 Use and dispose of tools and materials in an environmentally responsible manner

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe the effects of art finishing on various materials and fabrics in a performance context

describe safety issues associated with different art finishing techniques

describe suppliers of art finishing materials and products

explain when and how manufacturer’s safety data information is used.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to art finishing tools and materials.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
