Improvise advanced dance sequences

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to improvise advanced dance sequences.

Dancers who apply improvisation techniques could be performing improvised sequences in dance classes, auditions and rehearsals, or in live performances.

At this level improvisations would be relatively complex in nature and could be applied to a variety of dance styles.

Work is usually undertaken under supervision, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected given the nature of improvisation.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Refine knowledge of improvisation techniques used in dance

1.1 Discuss concepts involved in complex improvised dance performances with relevant personnel

1.2 Evaluate the artistic, creative and technical procedures of improvised works in various dance styles

1.3 Confirm requirements for an improvised performance

2. Prepare the body for dance

2.1 Perform warm-up and warm-down activities that further develop muscle stretching, strengthening and relaxation

2.2 Adhere to injury-prevention techniques

2.3 Apply strategies to prevent common health issues for dancers

3. Develop complex improvisation skills using a variety of stimuli

3.1 In consultation with relevant personnel, identify typical movement and travel associated with various stimuli

3.2 Apply advanced dance technique when communicating natural physical and emotional responses to various stimuli

3.3 Select a dance style appropriate to the given stimuli

3.4 Introduce a repeated motif created during improvisation that reflects given stimuli

3.5 Demonstrate an expressive interpretation of stimuli through dance

4. Rehearse and perform improvised sequences

4.1 Set movement boundaries for individual improvisation pieces within a set timeframe displaying appropriate level of dance technique

4.2 Introduce movement dynamics and partner work

4.3 Vary performance environment as required

4.4 Rehearse and perform improvised sequences in complex dance sequences

4.5 Organise performances to be recorded for evaluation purposes

4.6 Evaluate choreographic potential of improvised work and seek feedback from relevant personnel

4.7 Apply feedback to future performances

Evidence of the ability to:

perform an improvised sequence in a complex dance sequence

provide and adhere to own individual interpretation of movement boundaries established for the improvisation

incorporate movement dynamics and partner work into performances

use terminology associated with chosen dance style correctly.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe characteristics of chosen dance styles and techniques for improvisation in those styles

explain how different dance techniques can be used to express emotion and storylines

describe issues and challenges that arise in the context of developing improvisation skills and suggest ways of addressing them

describe safety procedures as they apply to performing improvisations that use staging effects, elements and equipment as stimuli.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to appropriate dance performance areas or spaces with suitable flooring.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
