Operate floor electrics

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set and operate a range of floor electrics for live productions or performances.

It applies to individuals who create specific on-stage effects, which can involve both front and backstage lighting facilities. They use a lighting plan provided by a supervising senior lighting technician or lighting designer.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

4.4 Note changes to cue sheets and update and file other documentation as required and according to enterprise procedures

Evidence of the ability to:

set, operate and power off floor electrics and associated equipment safely and effectively according to production documentation, performance requirements, enterprise instructions and safety procedures

collaborate with production team, designers and performers during process, responding to the artistic and technical elements of a production, including cues, directions and performance requirements, in a timely and efficient manner

demonstrate different technical techniques in responding quickly and effectively to unexpected contingencies during performance

set, check functionality, and use back-up systems in conjunction with lighting control when required

identify and rectify problems or faults with elements of floor electrics during pre-production and production according to enterprise procedures and with minimum disruption to work flows, and inform relevant personnel of ongoing or complex problems as required

produce and adjust documentation throughout process according to enterprise procedures and using appropriate lighting and floor electrics terminology.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe the roles and responsibilities of lighting designers and technicians, particularly floor electrics operators, in the creative arts industry

describe the key features and operations of the main types of floor electrics equipment and describe their uses in different production contexts

describe the key features of different elements of floor electrics

explain the relationship between floor electrics and other lighting and staging effects

discuss the impact of technology used in floor electrics on production operations

broadly outline the artistic and technical elements of productions

identify typical problems that may arise in the context of setting and operating floor electrics and briefly describe solutions

explain duty of care for the safety of colleagues and the general public while performing floor electrics work, especially when on location

discuss work health and safety procedures that apply to testing, installing and operating floor electrics.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

a team, to involve and interact with, to reflect the collaborative nature of the technical production process

industry-standard equipment

a venue with the capacity for floor electrics operation

floor electrics equipment

cueing and other production documentation from which floor electrics are operated

a production requiring floor electrics.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
