This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the distribution of music in both physical and digital formats, as well as products associated with the music.

It applies to individuals who are responsible for managing the process of distributing music and merchandise associated with an artist or act. The unit may apply to artists, musical publishers, digital distributors/aggregators in association with independent labels, as well as those who work in record companies.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1.1 Research traditional and new distribution models for music and associated products in consultation with people having appropriate expertise

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain different models for the digital distribution of music

explain the rights and obligations of parties in music distribution deals, including copyright and royalty income

outline the processes for distributing music and associated products in both digital and physical form

outline issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of managing the distribution of music and associated products, and how they might be overcome.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

an environment where distribution of music and associated products is required

interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
