Make prop furniture

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to make a range of prop furniture, including trick furniture. The unit relates to the construction of furniture for use in a theatrical or event context and does not cover general furniture construction skills, which are found in the MSF Furnishing Training Package.

Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that prop furniture meets the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

1.1 Confirm prop furniture construction requirements in consultation with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation

1.2 Discuss factors that impact on the type of prop furniture required and plan accordingly

1.3 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines

1.4 Decide on most appropriate furniture construction techniques based on an analysis of how items are to be used, including whether furniture needs to be weight-bearing

1.5 Take budgetary and other constraints into account when making decisions about constructing prop furniture

1.6 Prepare tools, equipment and materials according to construction plans

1.7 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible

2. Make prop furniture items

2.1 Follow construction plans to create prop furniture items, including trick furniture, in a logical order and within production timelines

2.2 Participate in discussions with relevant personnel throughout the construction process to ensure requirements are met and adjust construction processes as required

2.3 Construct prop furniture using the selected media, construction techniques and finishes

3. Complete prop furniture construction

3.1 Check furniture in terms of durability, quality of finish, and suitability for production requirements

3.2 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements

3.3 Follow safety procedures during the construction process according to organisational requirements

3.4 Update documentation as required

3.5 Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance

Evidence of the ability to:

use a range of techniques and processes to construct prop furniture for at least one production or event

follow safety procedures

meet deadlines

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe ways in which furniture can be used as props in production and event contexts

provide examples of furniture items that are usually constructed, and those which would typically be acquired by other means

describe the properties of materials commonly used for prop furniture and explain how they are used

describe issues and challenges that typically arise when constructing prop furniture and suggest ways to address them

explain techniques for creating trick furniture, including how to create a breakaway section

describe safety issues associated with the use of materials, tools and equipment for furniture construction.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

equipment, tools and materials used to construct prop furniture

a work area where prop furniture can be safely constructed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
