This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to repair, maintain and alter scenic art elements used in various productions.

It applies to individuals who work under supervision as members of set construction crews to maintain the condition of scenic art elements for productions. To do this they use a range of hand and power tools, and are also responsible for painting and colouring a full range of textures associated with sets and props.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Clarify maintenance requirements

1.1 Confirm production requirements and timelines with relevant production personnel

1.2 Check scenic art elements to identify faults that need to be repaired or alterations that need to be made

1.3 Discuss priorities for repair and maintenance of scenic art elements with relevant production personnel

1.4 Label, code and store elements safely, in line with production and enterprise procedures

2. Repair scenic art elements

2.1 Confirm repairs that need to be undertaken with relevant personnel

2.2 Check stock of materials needed for repairs and purchase items as required in line with individual level of responsibility

2.3 Clean scenic art elements, taking particular care with delicate or problematic materials

2.4 Apply paint to areas of scenic art elements as required

2.5 Complete minor repairs to scenic art elements within agreed timelines and place in storage according to enterprise procedures

2.6 Comply with health and safety standards when handling consumable or hazardous materials and using hand or power tools

3. Alter scenic art elements

3.1 Interpret instructions about alterations that need to be made to scenic art elements

3.2 Complete alterations as instructed or seek assistance from others if work is outside individual level of responsibility

3.3 Label altered components and store as required

3.4 Complete documentation in accordance with enterprise procedures

3.5 Maintain a clean and safe work area and store materials and equipment in accordance with enterprise procedures

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in constructing sets and creating scenic art

describe characteristics of a range of materials used in scenic art elements

describe techniques for maintaining the condition of scenic art elements

outline systems for storing and identifying scenic art elements

explain health and safety standards that apply to using tools and hazardous materials for maintaining the condition of scenic art elements.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

a work space and equipment to complete repairs and alterations to scenic art

productions requiring scenic art elements

interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
