Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

The role outlined in this unit is particularly relevant to stage managers but may also be applicable to those working in individual production areas.

This unit has linkages to a range of other technical and stage management units and combined assessment and/or training with those units may be appropriate, e.g.:

CUESMT09B Plot and rehearse cues

CUESMT08B Call the production/event

CUESMT11B Create, update and use production reference documents

CUFLGT402A Set-up, record and operate lighting cues and effects

CUELGT07C Record and operate lighting using advanced techniques

CUESET17B Develop props construction plans to meet design requirements

CUESET04C Use research, innovation and experimentation to create props

CUESET11B Develop set construction plans to meet design requirements

CUESET07C Use research, innovation and experimentation to create sets.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse a performance outline/script to identify the elements that contribute to the realisation of the script from both a technical and creative perspective.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Employability Skills

This unit contains employability skills.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

The Evidence Guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:

knowledge of the format and structure of performance outlines/scripts in the relevant industry context

ability to apply techniques for the analysis and breakdown of a script to inform production planning.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

The assessment context must provide for:

practical demonstration of skills through the analysis of a script or performance outline and production of accurate documentation on specific production requirements.

Method of assessment

Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:

review of documentation prepared by the candidate from outline/script analysis

discussion with the candidate to assess understanding of the outline/script

presentation of key information extracted from the outline/script

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of cultural context, different formats relevant to the type of production

review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate.

Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).

Guidance information for assessment

This unit requires access to:

scripts/performance outlines on which the candidate can work.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Required skills

for research skills needed to enhance understanding and appreciation of production context

literacy skills sufficient to analyse complex outlines/scripts to inform decision-making and planning

Required knowledge

format and structure of performance outlines/scripts relevant to the area of work, e.g. plays, concert outlines, corporate event outline

documentation formats required for information extracted from performance outlines/scripts

broad historical and cultural context for types of productions relevant to the area of work

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

Performance outline/script is a generic term, and may relate to:

any type of production/event (live or otherwise)

Creative parameters of the production may relate to:

characterisation

cultural context

design issues

overall atmosphere and mood

plot development and flow of action (rising, climax, falling)

style

symbolism

Technical parameters of the production and specific production requirements will be closely linked to the creative parameters and may relate to:

audio

costume

design issues

general staging

lighting

set, props, scenic art

Appropriate research to assist in the provision of context may relate to:

audience analysis in location for production

cultural/historical context

review of corporate objectives

review of other productions

social analysis (current or historical)

Format for documentation will vary depending on the production area but may include:

'doubling' list

cast list

cast/character/costume/props matrix

extract lists

lighting plots

notated score

quick change lists

rehearsal scene breakdown

scene by scene principles and extras lists

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
