All art and design practitioners apply the skills and knowledge in this unit. Sustainability considerations apply both to activities within the practice and to the design of products and services that might be made, operated or used by others.

At this level, the practitioner applies a self-directed approach to ensuring the sustainability of the practice.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to integrate environmentally sustainable approaches into creative art or design practice.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

evaluation of presentation or documentation prepared by the candidate detailing plans to achieve an environmentally sustainable practice

participation in discussions with the candidate and others about sustainability issues in a given area

review of written or verbal reports developed by the candidate

review of portfolios of evidence

review of third-party reports from experienced practitioners.

Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands (e.g. literacy) and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Assessment Tasks

asking suppliers for sustainable products

explicitly incorporating sustainability in all projects

participating in industry-based sustainability initiatives

promoting and sharing information about sustainable options to colleagues

selecting suppliers with sustainable products.
