This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to maintain small arms ammunition to depot level maintenance requirements as specified by the Australian Defence Force.

It includes preparing for and maintaining small arms ammunition, and completing maintenance activity. It also includes identifying and selecting tools and equipment, and applying organisational safety requirements and appropriate legislative and regulatory requirements.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence Required

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying relevant operational policies and procedures

applying relevant work health and safety requirements

applying safety, legislative and statutory requirements relevant to the risk assessment

assessing and applying compatibility to identify and calculate net explosive quantities

calculating net explosive quantity

completing maintenance activity

conducting relevant small arms ammunition tests

identifying, selecting and using appropriate tools and equipment

maintaining documentation

preparing for and maintaining small arms ammunition.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

effects of environmental conditions

net explosive quantity calculations

operational maintenance procedures

operations, characteristics and limitations of small arms ammunition to be maintained

operations, characteristics and limitations of tools and equipment used in maintenance

relevant documentation requirements

relevant operational policies and procedures, including work health and safety

small arms ammunition maintenance including:

cleaning

components change out

fuzing and defuzing

painting

small arms ammunition testing procedures

storage, distribution or maintenance of explosive ordnance

technical references including:

relevant orders and instructions.

relevant publications

technical drawings

technical reference pamphlets

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that reflect workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

acceptable means of simulation assessment

applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry.

Assessment Tasks
