This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct a field hygiene survey as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

It includes determining requirements, and performing and reporting on findings of field hygiene survey.

This unit applies to personnel working in ADF preventive health.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Persons undertaking this unit work independently and perform routine tasks in a range of familiar contexts.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Determine field hygiene survey requirements

Liaise with relevant stakeholders to gain support for survey activities

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

applying relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures

communicating appropriately and consulting effectively with stakeholders

conducting an initial hygiene risk assessment

gathering field hygiene data via from available sources

identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing control measures – in particular in relation to field hygiene risks and actions to correct field hygiene deficiencies

interpreting field hygiene data

making technical judgements based on own level of knowledge and experience

prioritising tasking.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

aetiology of disease relevant to vector borne diseases

causes of disease transmission

control measures of disease transmission

food safety standards including:

food storage and distribution standards

hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) approach to food control

health surveillance system

initial hygiene risk assessment including:

ability to withstand a storm or weather conditions

determining materials used in constructing the building (e.g. asbestos)

likelihood of collapse

protection from weather or flooding

providing appropriate access and egress

suited to the purpose for which they are being used

ventilation

methods of establishing field hygiene and waste facilities

pathophysiology of common communicable diseases

process of disease

relevant documentation processes

relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures

relevant vector borne diseases

risk management principles

water quality assurance measures.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations, where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

a range of environments (urban and field), relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulations

relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment, stores and personal protective equipment currently used in industry

relevant documentation including operational procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
