Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to design a plantation or monoculture. The unit also applies to an area that is to be used for multiple uses, such as farm forestry.

The unit applies to job roles including Arboriculture Supervisor, Farm Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Operations Supervisor, Harvesting Supervisor, Harvesting Team Leader, Propagation and Stand Health Supervisor and Tree Farm Supervisor.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for plantation design

1.1 Assess site and identify site environmental protection measures.

1.2 Review and analyse relevant plans to assess impacts on proposed plantation.

1.3 Consult with stakeholders and obtain input into the design for the site.

1.4 Review organisational maps, plans and strategies and how they relate to plantation requirements.

1.5 Develop measurable performance indicators, specifications and targets for the plantation.

2. Design components of plantation

2.1 Arrange surveys and determine species tolerances for the plantation site.

2.2 Develop plan for site preparation.

2.3 Develop design components and obtain approvals.

2.4 Communicate design plan and performance indicators to appropriate personnel.

3. Review plantation design

3.1 Assess plantation data and documentation against plans and adjacent plantations

3.2 Prepare recommendations and design improvements.

3.3 Record and report on plantation design processes.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce designs for plantations that comply with commonwealth, state or territory or local government legislative and regulatory requirements

follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to designing plantations

interpret aerial photographs and maps

design a plantation using consultative processes with colleagues and stakeholders to obtain inputs, and ensure efficient use of resources

design a plantation that meets specified requirements

review a plantation design against determined performance indicators, specifications and targets

develop recommendations for design improvements.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

commonwealth, state or territory or local government legislative and regulatory requirements and codes of practice relevant to designing plantations

relevant species characteristics and selection information including:

appropriate species

provenance

distribution and hardiness of trees to be sown or planted to suit the area to be planted

factors relevant to an assessment of the area including:

soil types

site rainfall characteristics

understory species

canopy

general forest lean

wind speed and direction

fallen trees

retained vegetation

density of trees

ground slope

soil and water protection

ground hazards and obstacles

contingencies for modifying operations during wet or other adverse weather conditions

hygiene of the area

relevant commonwealth, state or territory, and local legislation and regulations.

plantation design components including:

roads

fences

drainage channels

forest area boundaries

environmental protection requirements relevant to plantation design

organisational policies and procedures for designing plantations including the following:

tending plans

harvesting plans

organisational marketing and strategic plans

plans or regulations relating to chemical use and environmental requirements.

environmental risks and hazards in the area of the proposed site

common diseases, pests and nutritional deficiencies that affect plantations

the principles of good design for plantations.

The following resources must be made available:

requirements for a plantation design

PPE suitable for designing plantations

Organisational policies and procedures relevant to designing plantations

Relevant parties for the purposes of consulting and communicating

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
