This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to conduct forestry operations using a crawler tractor, including planning and preparation for work, conducting operational checks, the safe and effective operation of the crawler for a range of mandatory tasks, the use of attachments and operator maintenance activities.

The unit applies to those who conduct forestry operations using crawler tractor in a forest environment.

1. Plan and prepare for crawler operation

1.1 Identify and follow WHS, environmental, legal and organisational requirements for conducting forestry operations using a crawler tractor.

1.2 Review work order and clarify with appropriate personnel.

1.3 Assess type and quality of material to be moved with a crawler and identify defects that present safety issues.

1.4 Select equipment appropriate to work requirements and check for operational effectiveness.

1.5 Plan crawler operations in line with site procedures and site environmental and heritage concerns.

2. Operate crawler

2.1 Establish and maintain communication with relevant personnel.

2.2 Carry out equipment pre start-up checks are in line with manufacturer's recommendations and site procedures.

2.3 Carry out safe, efficient and effective crawler operations to meet specifications in work order.

3. Carry out machine operator maintenance

3.1 Check crawler controls and functions, including implements or other attachments, brakes and manoeuvrability for serviceability and rectify any faults.

3.2 Record and report crawler operations and maintenance activities.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

safely operate a crawler tractor to carry out forestry operations efficiently and effectively

following organisational policies and procedures relevant to conducting forestry operations using crawler tractor

communicate effectively and work safely with others in the work area

carry out routine maintenance on tractor crawler.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

workplace requirements and standards for operating a crawler tractor

environmental protection requirements

operational procedures and checks including start-up and shut-down procedures

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

crawler operation techniques, attachments and capabilities

problem solving strategies to identify problems and equipment faults and rectify

procedures for recording and reporting workplace activities and information.

The following resources must be made available:

wheeled or tracked crawler tractor fitted with attachment fitted at the front-end

site to conduct crawler forestry operations

personal protective equipment required for crawler tractor operations

work order, workplace requirements and site standards for conducting operations using a crawler.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
