List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Prepare for grading, sorting and marking | 1.1 Review and check work order. 1.2 Identify site procedures for grading and sorting poles and debarked logs. 1.3 Locate type and quantity of poles and debarked logs to be graded, sorted and marked. 1.4 Select equipment for grading and check for operational effectiveness. |
2. Grade, sort and mark poles and debarked logs | 2.1 Visually assess length and diameter of poles or logs. 2.2 Review industry standards for ranges for sorting. 2.3 Identify material characteristics and defects of each pole or log against industry standards for grade type. 2.4 Measure, record and report moisture content. 2.5 Mark defects for docking. 2.6 Mark and sort material for grade classification, using markers or stickers that are easily interpretable 2.7 Record and report grading outcomes and distribution problems. |
3. Distribute material | 3.1 Move poles or logs to planned storage or processing operations. 3.2 Dispose of sub-standard material in line with site procedures and environmental requirements. 3.3 Monitor the movement of on-site movement of material and ensure intended flow is achieved. 3.4 Follow site procedures for labelling storage locations. |
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to grading round poles and debarked logs
efficiently and safely grade, sort and mark poles and debarked logs with varying moisture content and of varying size and length and colour in readiness for storage and/or processing
accurately identify defects in poles and debarked logs poles and debarked logs
distribute poles and debarked logs on site using designated equipment
follow site procedures to accurately record and report information
safely use moving and lifting equipment
safely dispose of waste material
follow procedures for storage and labelling.
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
types of equipment used for grading and marking round poles and debarked logs, and their maintenance requirements including:
measuring equipment
moisture meters
lifting equipment for the movement of poles or logs
moisture content of poles and logs
types of defects in poles and debarked logs, including:
warp

knots
resin pockets
methods and equipment for moving poles and debarked logs, which includes:
conveyor belt systems
track systems
lifting equipment
fork lifts
slings
lifting/moving frames
trolley jacks
gantry cranes
dozers
loaders
manual handling
methods of visual estimation, grading, colour identification and tagging
sorting, marking and distribution processes
industry standard diameters and lengths
storage systems and labelling
procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.
The following resources must be made available:
organisational policies and procedures relevant to grading round poles and debarked logs
poles or debarked logs of different size and type
equipment for moving poles or debarked logs

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
