Maintain caul plates and screens

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to clean, inspect and replace caul plates and screens in laminating and pressing equipment.

The unit applies to production operators and technicians who maintain caul plates and screens in a forest and wood products factory setting.

1. Prepare for maintenance

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Remove caul plates and screens for maintenance from designated machinery.

1.4 Plan maintenance process in line with work order.

2. Change, clean and polish caul plates

2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures and manufacturer’s recommendations throughout all maintenance and repair processes.

2.2 Identify plates requiring cleaning and move from circuit to plate rack.

2.3 Process plates through full cleaning cycle; inspect for defects and separate for repair where required.

2.4 Dry plates, prepare for use and return to circuit.

2.5 Polish plates using polishing table and head.

2.6 Store polished plates for use in line with work order.

2.7 Store or dispose of unused chemicals in line with environmental protection practices.

3. Prepare backing screens

3.1 Roll screens from plate and secure.

3.2 Process screens through full cleaning cycle; stack and inspect for faults.

3.3 Identify defective screens, remove and dispose of these in line with environmental protection practices.

4. Remove and replace transport plates

4.1 Coordinate load shifting and transport requirements to remove and replace transport plates with minimal downtime.

4.2 Identify defective plates, remove from circuit and dispose of these in line with environmental protection practices.

4.3 Prepare and fit replacement plates.

4.4 Record and report process outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete maintenance jobs in line with individual work orders

for each of the above jobs complete the following maintenance and repair activities:

process caul plates and screens through the full cleaning cycle which may be via chemical or heat treatment baths

polish caul plates to ensure optimum operation

inspect caul plates, screen and transport plates for defects and process for repair or dispose of.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for maintaining and repairing cauls and screens:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing defective materials

disposing of hazardous substances

operational purpose and features of caul plates, screens and transport plates

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
