The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:
• prepared equipment and assisted the operator with oral health care procedures for 3 different patients under general anaesthesia, including:
- assisting in aseptically handling and correctly positioning the equipment during the procedure
- following procedures to ensure patient safety during general anaesthesia
- correctly maintained and stored instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments
• supported the dental team in the discharge care of 1 patient recovering from an oral care procedure following general anaesthesia.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• medical emergencies and complications which may arise during and after general anaesthesia and appropriate medical responses and treatment to be given by the dental team.
Skills must have been demonstrated in the dental workplace with the addition of simulations and scenarios where the full range of contexts and situations cannot be provided in the workplace.
The requirement under performance evidence for the candidate to prepare equipment and assist the operator with oral health care procedures for 3 different patients under general anaesthesia must have been demonstrated using simulation prior to demonstration in the workplace and with members of the general public.
The following conditions must be met for this unit:
