This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to regularly service plant, equipment and machinery in accordance with maintenance schedules.

This unit applies to workers with well-developed skills where some discretion and judgement is required. Individuals will take responsibility for their own outputs within clearly defined guidelines and may participate in supervised work teams.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

1. Carry out routine assessment of plant, equipment and machinery

1.1 Identify service requirements of plant, equipment and machinery according to organisation requirements and manufacturers’ guidelines

1.2 Identify potential repair and replacement requirements of plant, equipment and machinery according to organisation requirements and manufacturer guidelines

2. Prepare for routine servicing and/or minor repairs

2.1 Identify and use required personal protective equipment

2.2 Prepare tools, equipment, parts and materials required to undertake the task

2.3 Read maintenance manuals and documented servicing routines to determine requirements

2.4 Prepare the area required to undertake the task

3. Perform routine servicing and minor repairs

3.1 Service and/or repair plant, equipment and machinery according to maintenance manuals, manufacturer guidelines, enterprise procedures and workplace health and safety (WHS) practices

3.2 Inform appropriate person/s upon completion of the task and complete the maintenance record

3.3 Advise appropriate person/s of faults and major repair and replacement requirements

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

followed correct procedures when performing routing servicing and minor repairs of at least 3 different examples of plant, equipment or machinery, including:

identifying and addressing faults

selecting and using correct tools and equipment

following workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures

selecting and using correct personal protective equipment.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

organisation plant, equipment and machinery to be serviced and repaired

organisation maintenance and reporting procedures

amount of time required to complete routine servicing of plant, equipment and machinery

WHS policies and procedures

identification of plant, equipment and machinery faults and problems that will require reference to a tradesperson

purpose and procedure of common routine servicing tasks, including:

cleaning or changing filters

adjustments and calibrations

checking for wear

lubrication

checking fluid levels and adding fluids

cleaning.

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

use of suitable facilities equipment and resources, including:

personal protective equipment

maintenance manuals and procedures

manufacturer instructions for plant, equipment and machinery being maintained

suitable work area that includes examples of plant, equipment and machinery

hand and power tools appropriate to the maintenance tasks in the organisation and to the worker’s role

modelling of industry operating conditions.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
