Set up machine for complex laminating

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set up a machine for a range of complex laminating processes including laminating reel to reel, sheet to reel and reel to sheet.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for job

1.1 Job specifications are read and interpreted from job documentation or production control system

1.2 Set-up is planned and carried out correctly in minimum time with minimum wastage

2. Set up reel transportation system

2.1 Unwind reel is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

2.2 Webbing procedures are carried out

2.3 Web control system is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

2.4 Reels are spliced/joined according to job specifications

2.5 Rewind reel is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

2.6 Sheeter is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

3. Set up machine for complex laminating

3.1 Application system cylinder is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

3.2 Adhesive application system is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

3.3 Binding pressures are set up and adjusted according to job specifications

3.4 Drying system is set up and adjusted according to job specifications

4. Set up in-line unit(s)

4.1 Minor in-line printing/converting/binding unit(s) are set up for basic process(es) and adjusted according to machine requirements and job specifications

4.2 Assistance is given in set-up of major in-line printing/converting/binding unit(s)

5. Conduct sample run

5.1 Raw material to be used for sample is organised correctly

5.2 Machine is set up and operated to produce a specified sample according to work health and safety requirements, manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures

5.3 Sample is visually inspected and/or tested or laboratory testing is organised according to enterprise procedures

5.4 Results are interpreted to determine adjustment requirements

5.5 Adjustment changes are carried out according to product and machine specifications

Evidence of the ability to:

demonstrate all safety devices on the machine

correctly set up machine for TWO moisture, chemical and extrusion laminating processes. For each process set up a laminating machine (2 or more ply) to complete TWO jobs on different substrates, of different sizes (large/small formats including one in-line process) while demonstrating splicing techniques in minimum time according to manufacturer’s and job specifications, enterprise procedures and listed performance criteria (at least one machine used must be fully automated).

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

determine information concerning laminating requirements found in the job documentation or production control system, and how this information can be interpreted to ensure smooth workflow throughout the factory

describe elements to consider when planning a laminating sample

identify work health and safety factors for:

setting up the laminating machine

adjusting the machine, and prior to any readjustments

setting the drying system

identify webbing procedures commonly used in the transportation area

identify areas to consider when setting up the web control system

identify problem areas likely to occur when setting up the sheeter

explain methods of splicing a web on the laminating process

list checks to make when setting up (and adjusting) the application system cylinder

list checks to make when setting up (and adjusting) the adhesive application system

identify factors that determine setting of the binding pressures

identify the largest/smallest size sheet that can be processed on this machine

explain how to adapt the machine to facilitate smaller/larger stock

determine in-line units available for the laminating process

describe circumstances that require machine adjustment

explain quality aspects to consider in a completed laminating job, and items to check against the client sample

list steps to ensure important features of the production control system are addressed

identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and the information included in them.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the converting, binding and finishing field of work and include access to facilities, equipment and materials used for laminating.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
