This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use computerised print quality monitoring devices, involving selection of computerised settings to set up and run a press to acceptable tolerances.

It applies to individuals who use specialised knowledge and analytical skills to monitor quality, both electronically and visually, and to make adjustments to maintain print quality.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Set up print control devices

1.1 CIP3/CIP4 data, or equivalent, is used to create a profile

1.2 Job is made ready to achieve position, register and fit to specified standards

1.3 Colour is made ready to match appropriate colour standards

1.4 Data is interpreted and appropriate adjustments made to gain supervisor’s approval to run press

2. Maintain print quality throughout run

2.1 Print is inspected visually to meet specified standards during run

2.2 Data is analysed against required standards

2.3 Appropriate adjustments are made to maintain consistency throughout run

2.4 Job is monitored and maintained at regular intervals to ensure quality

Evidence of the ability to:

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources

set up and align monitoring device to appropriate standards on THREE occasions – standards may be defined by enterprise/operator or default tolerances, client requirements, colour tolerances, and/or industry standards

produce profiles of samples taken during THREE different print runs that show print production is within agreed tolerances, if possible, using different variables.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain colour theory of:

additive colours (light), red, green, blue (RGB)

subtractive colours (pigments), cyan, magenta, yellow, black (CMYK)

discuss the relationship between ranges of visual colour RGB and CMYK

outline International Colour Consortium (ICC) profiling

describe underlying principles of densitometry and spectrophotometry

explain how to determine tolerance in densitometry and spectrophotometry

describe original colour control bar determinates

outline how to determine accuracy of elements in a colour bar

explain how to ensure consistent print quality output

explain how to recognise colour contamination

describe how to set alarm limits for colour contamination

describe the process for accessing data and determining that data is appropriate

explain the purpose of sampling to ensure consistency

describe processes to put in place if sample varies from standard

discuss ways quality can vary and how it can be fixed

outline computerised functions, common faults and electronic registration systems

describe information needed:

from pre-press to ensure quality product

to give to pre-press to ensure quality product

define these terms: registration, fit, position and alignment

explain the importance of registration marks.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the printing field of work including access to a computerised printing machine.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
