ICPSCP221
Prepare substrate

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and safely prepare and store a wide range of substrates for screen printing.

It applies to individuals working under direct supervision and performing mainly routine tasks.

In some cases, there may be an overlap with ICPCBF221 Set up and produce basic guillotined product. If substrate preparation is mostly guillotining, then ICPCBF221 Set up and produce basic guillotined product should be delivered.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Select substrate

1.1 Substrates are selected according to job specifications

1.2 Substrates selected must be of suitable form and quality according to job specifications and end use of product

2 Process substrate

2.1 Processing of substrate is carried out according to job specifications

2.2 Necessary preventive action is taken to avoid wastage and to ensure best yield with respect to grain direction and type of substrate selected

2.3 User maintenance requirements are identified and implemented according to manufacturer or supplier instructions

2.4 Substrate is inspected and print capability assessed, including need for any special preparation requirements

2.5 Substrate is suitably pre-treated, where required

2.6 Substrate is appropriately labelled according to job specifications

3 Store and handle substrate

3.1 Materials are safely handled according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

3.2 Materials and substrate are appropriately handled and stored according to manufacturer or supplier specifications to prevent damage and hazards to personnel

3.3 Offcuts of materials are disposed of according to regulatory requirements and enterprise procedures

Evidence of the ability to:

select, process and store TWO substrates according to manufacturer specifications, job specifications and enterprise procedures.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe the types of jobs that would suit different grades and thicknesses of substrate

explain how to identify defects and irregularities in the substrate

explain the pre-treatment of the surface required before printing

describe the tests that should be undertaken to determine the suitability of the substrate for printing

explain how to cut substrate to minimise wastage

identify the equipment used for preparing substrate

describe how to prepare substrate and the quality of preparation monitoring

explain the handling and storage procedures to prevent damage to substrate prior to printing

explain the correct procedures for the disposal of offcuts of substrate

identify manuals, safety information and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are located and the information included in these documents.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the screen printing field of work and include access to substrates.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
