Prepare coatings and adhesives

Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare coatings and adhesives.

It applies to individuals who perform a range of mainly routine tasks in various sectors of the printing and graphic arts industry, using limited practical skills and fundamental knowledge in a defined context. They generally work under direct supervision.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

You may want to include more information here about the target group and the purpose of the assessments (eg formative, summative, recognition)

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Select coatings, adhesives and additives

1.1 Coatings, adhesives and additives are selected according to job specifications

1.2 Suitability of coatings, adhesives and additives are checked and appropriate action is taken to meet quality standards of client requirements, and enterprise and industry standards

1.3 Coatings, adhesives and additives are selected according to suitability of substrate, physical and chemical properties and performance

2. Prepare coatings, adhesives and additives

2.1 Coatings, adhesives and additives are prepared according to Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and manufacturer’s/supplier’s instructions with suitable precautions to minimise waste

2.2 Correct weight/volume of coatings, adhesives and additives are mixed and prepared to match job specification and the process to be used

2.3 Formulation of coatings, adhesives and additives is appropriately recorded

3. Store and handle coatings, adhesives and additives

3.1 Coatings, adhesives and additives are appropriately stored, handled and labelled according to manufacturer’s/supplier’s instructions to prevent damage or hazards to personnel

3.2 Coatings, adhesives and additives are stored and used in a manner that ensures use before use-by dates

Evidence of the ability to:

correctly prepare coatings and adhesives according to job specifications

prepare TWO different coatings or adhesives for specific end-use requirements to meet job and workplace specifications.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

summarise selection of coatings/adhesives to match process and job requirements

describe how to determine suitability of the coatings/adhesives for the particular process

explain how characteristics of coatings/adhesives are matched to the job/substrate

explain how to determine if coatings/adhesives adhere to the substrate

identify health and safety concerns related to preparation, handling and storage of coatings/adhesives

outline correct handling procedures

describe details required to calculate quantities of coatings/adhesives

describe details required to record the formulation of coatings/adhesives

identify environmental conditions relevant to the storage of coatings/adhesives

outline conventions for labelling coatings/adhesives

identify required manuals, safety and other documentation and briefly outline the relevant information in each source.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Support field of work and include access to coatings, adhesives and substrates.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assingnment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
