This unit describes the skills required to identify and minimise the environmental impact of water industry work activities, to identify general environmental risks and to implement and monitor environmental procedures.

This unit applies to those working in all roles in the water industry.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Those undertaking this unit would work under indirect supervision, while performing mostly specific tasks in a range of contexts.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

1. Assess the environmental requirements of a specific project or site

1.1 Identify and investigate site-specific environmental issues with reference to relevant environmental legislation and standards.

1.2 Assess and record environmental risks and impacts.

1.3 Relate relevant environmental procedures for each environmental risk.

2. Implement environmental procedures

2.1 Plan activities for the selected environmental procedures for the site and take relevant action.

2.2 Record and report environmental incidents and emergency procedures.

3. Report and review the application of environmental procedures

3.1 Monitor the effects of selected environmental controls and report.

3.2 Complete environmental reporting procedures for the specific project or site.

3.3 Report environmental risks, potential impacts and incidents.

3.4 Contribute to regular reviews of environmental procedures for continuous improvement.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

Competency should be assessed in an actual workplace or in a simulated environment, with access to equipment and infrastructure appropriate to the outcome. Competency should be demonstrated over time to ensure the candidate is assessed across a variety of situations.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
