This unit applies to cemetery and crematorium staff involved in burial works. It requires consistent application of safe work practices according to legislative and workplace requirements and communication and literacy skills under supervision as part of a team with some responsibility.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assess, remove and replace monumentation, ledgers and lids.

Evidence of the following is essential:

ability to identify gravesite location and to assess safe removal methods for ledgers and concrete lids

the safe and efficient removal of ledgers and reinstatement and good presentation of burial sites at conclusion of works

removing ledgers and concrete lids on multiple occasions to ensure consistency of performance and ability to respond to different situations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

demonstration of skills in a cemetery environment where assessment of monumentation and surrounding gravesites can occur

access to relevant documentation, such as cemetery plans or maps

access to relevant tools and equipment, including personal protective equipment.

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of candidate identifying and assessing a range of gravesites with different coverings

observation of candidate safely removing a range of coverings and reinstating a range of graves

written or verbal questioning to assess knowledge and understanding of workplace policies and procedures, and relevant legislation

review of portfolios of evidence and third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate.

Assessment Tasks
