guidelines relating to the use of a light and flags visual communication between vessels

d

Action is taken promptly to report visual communication problems in accordance with established procedures

e

Work is completed systematically with required attention to detail

f

Recognises and adapts appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions between crew and others

3

Context of assessment

a

Assessment of competency must comply with the assessment requirements of the relevant maritime regulations

b

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken within relevant marine authority approved and audited arrangements by a registered training organisation:

1

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral examinations, and

2

Appropriate practical assessment must occur:

i

at the registered training organisation; and/or

ii

on an appropriate working or training vessel

4

Specificresourcesrequired for assessment

Access is required to opportunities to:

a

demonstrate performance in suitably simulated visual communication exercises covering a range of communication situations typically experienced on a vessel; and/or

b

demonstrate the use of visual communication in an appropriate range of operational situations on board an operational commercial or training vessel

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

1

relatively independently under broad operational requirements, with limited accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes

c.

Work involves:

1

the application of principles of visual signalling to accurately send and receive messages using flashing lights and flags. Correct coding and decoding of messages using the International Code of Signals is required

d.

Work requires:

1

the accurate and consistent use of signalling lights and flags to send and receive messages using the International Code of Signals

2. WORKSITE ENVIRONMENT

Visual communication may becarried out:

1

by day or night in both normal and emergency situations

2

under any possible conditions of weather and loading

3

while underway

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
