This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate a range of heavy recovery ancillary equipment used in the towing and recovery process.

It includes checking job requirements, preparing heavy recovery ancillary equipment for use, operating ancillary equipment, and shutting down heavy recovery ancillary equipment.

This unit applies to those working in the heavy recovery industry. It does not include salvage operations.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Prepare heavy recovery ancillary equipment for use

Operate ancillary equipment

Equipment is started up using correct sequence in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer specifications

Equipment is operated in a safe and controlled manner in accordance with manufacturer specifications, and is monitored for performance and efficiency

Input materials are monitored and non-conformances are identified and handled in accordance with organisational requirements

Processing outputs are monitored and adjustments to equipment operation are made in accordance with job requirements

Shut down heavy recovery ancillary equipment

4.1

Shut-down procedures for equipment are completed in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer specifications

Routine maintenance of equipment is carried out in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer specifications

Equipment is stored and secured in accordance with organisational requirements

Malfunctions, faults, irregular performance and damage to equipment are detailed and reported in accordance with organisational requirements

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two occasions and include:

completing relevant documentation

implementing contingency plans

interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work

operating heavy recovery ancillary equipment

reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

factors that may cause traffic delays and diversions

manufacturer specifications and operator manuals

relevant dangerous goods information for operating ancillary equipment

relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements

relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations

workplace documentation

workplace driving and operational instructions.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Candidates are required to:

identify three (3) different types of ancillary recovery equipment and their uses and

operate two (2) types of heavy recovery ancillary equipment safely.

Resources for assessment include:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.
