This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare cargo for the transfer with slings in accordance with workplace requirements and relevant regulatory requirements, within the transport and logistics industry.

It includes preparing for cargo transfer, calculating safe working load (SWL) or working load limit (WLL) of slings and loads, slinging and unslinging cargo, and strapping and unstrapping goods.

People achieving competence in this unit will need to fulfil the applicable state/territory legislated high risk work licence requirements and to comply with relevant codes of practice and/or guidelines.

Safety checks and equipment tests are performed under limited supervision.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

applying relevant high risk work legislation and workplace procedures

calculating safe working load (SWL) and working load limit (WLL)

communicating and working effectively with others

completing relevant documentation

inspecting equipment prior to use

implementing contingency plans

modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule

operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with workplace operating procedures

planning own work, predicting consequences and identifying improvements

reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs

reporting and/or rectifying identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

selecting and using relevant gear and equipment when preparing cargo for transfer with slings

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards

using balance points and estimating weights in setting up loads to be shifted

working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

housekeeping standards and procedures

operational work systems, equipment, management and site operating procedures for transferring cargo with slings

problems that may occur when preparing cargo for transfer with slings and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems

relevant regulations for transferring cargo with slings, including current ADG Code and bond, quarantine and other high risk work legislative requirements

relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines

requirements for SWL and WLL

slings, dogging and rigging licence to perform high risk work requirements

site layout and obstacles

workplace procedures and policies for transferring cargo with slings.
