Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for work
   • Identify drainage system issues and develop plans to rectify them
   • Locate the affected section of drainage system
   • Determine work requirements and responsibility for repair
   • Select materials, tools, equipment and machinery
   • Carry out pre-operational and safety checks on tools, equipment and machinery
   • Identify work health and safety hazards, assess risks and implement controls
   • Select, use and maintain suitable personal protective equipment
2. Determine access to drainage system
   • Access plan of drainage system and locate access points
   • Carry out digging without unnecessary damage to buildings, site, environment or existing fixtures and fittings
3. Carry out work
   • Use safe manual lifting and handling techniques
   • Access drainage system and rectify identified issue
   • Test drainage system to confirm issue has been rectified
   • Repair or reseal drainage system to permit normal use
   • Advise relevant personnel that repairs have been completed and the drainage system has been commissioned for use
4. Complete work
   • Clean work area and dispose of debris and waste
   • Clean and maintain tools and equipment

The candidate must be assessed on their ability to integrate and apply the performance requirements of this unit in a workplace setting. Performance must be demonstrated consistently over time and in a suitable range of contexts.

The candidate must provide evidence that they can:

complete a range of rectification works

identify a range of drainage system issues relevant to their industry, including surface and sub-surface issues

inspect the site to determine access to drainage system

plan and prepare for the work

test the system and clean up after rectifying the identified issues
