Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for paving work
   • Confirm work instructions with the supervisor
   • Prepare tools and equipment
   • Select, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing
   • Check the quantity and quality of materials to make sure they conform to the requirements of the job plans
   • Identify work health and safety hazards, assess risks and report to supervisor
2. Set out and prepare paving area
   • Mark out the area to be paved according to site plan
   • Assist with pegging the reduced levels of the proposed paving area according to site plans and supervisor's instructions
3. Undertake ground preparation
   • Excavate the area to shape, depth and dimensions to sub-base level
   • Trim the sub base to the designated level and falls to ensure that the final level of paving can be achieved
   • Construct drainage systems as necessary according to site plan
   • Place and compact base material to the required finished level
4. Lay bedding material
   • Establish screed rails to ensure the bedding course is maintained
   • Spread bedding material loosely over the area to ensure the designated bedding depth can be attained
   • Level bedding material to the designated level and falls
5. Lay pavers to a given pattern
   • Set grid string lines to required levels to ensure the designated pattern of the project is attained and to maintain straight lines of components
   • Set out pavers to the required dimensions and pattern
   • Lay whole pavers and compact to the established finish level
   • Mark, cut and fit pavers to fill gaps in the pattern within nominated tolerances
   • Install permanent edge constraints to prevent movement of pavers
   • Spread sand on the paved area and compact to the finished level
6. Clean site and store tools and equipment
   • Sweep paving to produce a clean and flat surface free of debris
   • Dispose of or recycle soil and waste material from the site to ensure minimal impact on the environment
   • Clean and store all tools and equipment
