Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to collect seed
   • Identify and follow environmental, legislative and organisational requirements to collect seed
   • Review work plan for seed collection
   • Identify potential locations for seed collection
   • Obtain necessary approvals and permissions for access to site and removal of seeds
   • Plan seed collecting operations to ensure safe working conditions
   • Communicate with others involved in seed collection project
   • Select and prepare materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment
2. Select and assess seed
   • Follow work health and safety policies and procedures when collecting and cleaning seed
   • Follow environmental protection and biosecurity measures for the site
   • Identify plant species required
   • Assess plant species and conditions to ensure seeds are from healthy plants
   • Select the appropriate methods of seed collection
   • Collect seed from a range of plants and different areas of the plant without causing damage to the parent plant
   • Place seed in clean containers and clearly and accurately label according to organisational requirements
3. Clean and store seed
   • Separate seed from other materials
   • Weigh and store seed in line with species requirements
   • Accurately record seed information
   • Record and report seed collection information and results

Performance Evidence

The candidate must be assessed on their ability to integrate and apply the performance requirements of this unit in a workplace setting. Performance must be demonstrated consistently over time and in a suitable range of contexts.

The candidate must provide evidence that they can:

obtain all necessary permissions and approvals to collect seed in a particular area, including operating in a particular jurisdiction, removal of native seed from a national park and permission from Elders or Custodians to work on Country

use and maintain relevant material, equipment and resources efficiently and safely

carry out seed collecting, cleaning and storage procedures efficiently and safely

identify seed species relevant to plan

follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to collecting seed

distinguish between healthy and unhealthy parent plants for seed collection

accurately record seed collection information and results

apply work health and safety procedures for seed collection

apply biosecurity measures in collection and storage of seeds

apply sustainability practices in the context of own work
