Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to sex birds
   • Confirm work to be undertaken from work program and management
   • Follow biosecurity procedures
   • Follow animal welfare requirements
   • Select, check and maintain tools and equipment
   • Identify work health and safety hazards, assess risks and implement suitable controls
   • Select, use and maintain suitable personal protective equipment
2. Identify and sex birds
   • Confirm and identify hatchlings to be sexed
   • Handle and sort chickens with care
   • Sex birds according to method
   • Place sexed chicks into trays marked accordingly
3. Complete hygiene and administration activities
   • Dispose of all debris and waste in line with enterprise environmental policies
   • Clean, maintain and store tools, machinery and equipment appropriately
   • Clean and maintain work areas
   • Complete documentation, records and reports promptly and accurately

Performance Evidence

The candidate must be assessed on their ability to integrate and apply the performance requirements of this unit in a workplace setting. Performance must be demonstrated consistently over time and in a suitable range of contexts.

The candidate must provide evidence that they can:

follow biosecurity procedures

make preparations to sex poultry

identify hatchlings to be sexed

sex poultry using feather or colour sexing methods

handle birds appropriately

follow hygiene requirements

follow administration requirements

follow animal welfare requirements

implement enterprise work health and safety policies
