Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for work
   • Job requirements and welding information are identified from work instructions
   • Welding equipment and resources are identified, selected and inspected
   • Size, type and quantity of materials and components are obtained and inspected for compliance
   • Work areas and welding are planned according to workplace procedures
2. Perform basic welding
   • Work health and safety (WHS) requirements are identified according to workplace procedures
   • Weld equipment is set up to suit job requirements and workplace procedures
   • Welding methods are selected to suit job requirements
   • Welding is carried out according to workplace standards and without causing damage to property, vehicle or components
3. Perform basic thermal cutting, heating and gouging work
   • Basic thermal cutting, heating and gouging equipment is set up to suit job requirements and workplace procedures
   • Basic thermal cutting, heating and gouging equipment is selected to suit job requirements
   • Basic thermal cutting, heating and gouging are carried out according to workplace standards and without causing damage to property, vehicle or components
4. Complete work processes
   • Work is completed and checked against job specifications
   • Materials that can be reused are collected and stored
   • Waste and scrap materials are removed according to workplace procedures
   • Work area is cleaned and equipment is maintained
   • Faulty equipment is identified, tagged and reported
