Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for painting
   • Paints and materials are identified and prepared according to workplace procedures
   • Panels are masked off to ensure surrounding areas are protected from overspray
   • Spraying equipment is selected and inspected, and faulty equipment identified, tagged and reported to appropriate personnel
   • Paint colours are matched according to job specifications and vehicle paint code
2. Operate spraying equipment
   • Spray painting guns are checked and adjusted for spray pattern, fan width and paint flow
   • Spray painting booths are inspected for correct operation and adjusted if required
3. Apply paint
   • Primers and paint are applied to ensure interior and exterior surfaces are coated
   • Paint is applied according to manufacturer’s recommended thickness, lustre and surface finish
   • Paint coatings are monitored for surface blemishes
   • Paint viscosity is monitored and adjusted to ensure compliance with paint manufacturer specifications
4. Inspect painted surfaces
   • Painted surfaces are visually inspected and faults identified
   • Painted surfaces with paint faults are redirected for rework and appropriate personnel are notified
5. Complete work processes
   • Spraying equipment is cleaned and inspected according to workplace procedures
   • Work areas are cleaned, and unused materials stored
   • Waste materials are removed and disposed of according to workplace environmental procedures
   • Workplace job sheets or production schedules are completed
