Job requirements must include:

demolition scope and plans, specifications, quality requirements and operational details

manufacturer specifications and instructions where specified

safety data sheets (SDS) where applicable

regulatory and legislative requirements relevant to demolishing shopfronts and bulkheads, including relevant Australian standards

SWMS relating to demolishing shopfronts and bulkheads.

Shopfront and bulkhead must include:

non-load-bearing external walls and cladding

suspended ceiling structures

shopfronts and glazed sections

joinery and fixtures

high level bulkheads.

Identification of hazards and risks must include checking for:

hazardous substances, including:

lead

fibreglass

asbestos

falling objects

issues relating to:

materials handling

working at heights

working in proximity to others

work site visitors.

Risk management and hazard control measures must include:

adherence to regulatory requirements for removing and disposing of hazardous substances

fall protection when working at heights

safe manual handling procedures

safe operating procedures for working in proximity to others and for work site visitors

service isolation, where applicable

traffic control, where applicable

use of well-fitting personal protective equipment suited to the task as prescribed under legislation, regulations and workplace policies and practices

work permits.

Health and safety requirements must include:

compliance with:

organisational safety policies and procedures

project safety plan

state or territory legislation, regulations and codes of practice

contribution to developing and reviewing SWMS for demolition tasks

emergency procedures, including:

emergency shutdown and stopping

evacuation

organisational first aid requirements

safe operating procedures for the use of tools and equipment.

Environmental requirements must include:

correct procedures for disposing of waste

energy efficiency.

Plant, tools and equipment must include ten or more of the following:

air compressors

allen keys

angle grinders

brooms

chisels

crow or pinch bars

dust suppression blankets

elevated work platforms

hack saws

hammers

hand saws

ladders

pincers

pliers

pneumatic and electric tools

power leads

power saws

props

saw stools and planks

scaffolding

shovels

sledge hammers

spanners

water hoses and spray attachments

wheelbarrows.

Undiscovered hazards that must be checked for before starting tasks must include:

asbestos

biological waste, including animal faeces

chemicals

contaminated soils

live power and other services, including:

gas

fire

mechanical

plumbing and drainage

telecommunications

process waste

syringes

termite damage

underground storage tanks.


Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, and must demolish:

one shopfront that is at least 3.6 metres high and that includes:

glazing

bulkheads

door closure

joinery

one internal cabinet or fixture that is at least 3.6 metres high and 2.4 metres wide and attached to the building structure.

In doing the above work, the person must:

locate, interpret and apply information, standards and specifications relevant to the demolition

comply with site safety plan, health and safety regulations, and state and territory legislation applicable to workplace operations

comply with organisational policies and procedures, including quality requirements

safely and effectively use tools, plant and equipment

communicate and work effectively and safely with others.


Knowledge Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

construction terminology used in shopfitting

demolition and building materials and their characteristics

procedures and techniques relevant to demolishing shopfronts

identification and handling requirements for hazardous substances, including lead, fibreglass and asbestos

contents of and terms used in:

safety data sheets (SDS) and safe work method statements (SWMS) for tasks

plans, specifications and drawings relating to demolishing shopfronts and bulkheads

materials storage requirements and processes and environmentally friendly waste management

types, characteristics, uses and limitations of plant, tools and equipment used to demolish shopfronts and bulkheads

processes for calculating volumes of material for removal

safe procedures for the use of scaffolding

workplace and equipment safety requirements relating to demolishing shopfronts and bulkheads.
