Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Create drawing template files.
  2. Create 2-D drawings.
  3. Import files.
  4. Edit drawing components.
  5. Print CAD drawings.
  6. Save and back up files.
  7. Export files.

Range Statement

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Drawing requirementsmust include:

details:

area analysis

construction notes

general notes

location of neighbouring buildings

services plans

structural information

five or more of the following:

bracing plans

electrical power and lighting plans

floor framing plans

floor plans

house drainage plans (sewerage)

lot plans

roof drainage plans

roof framing plans

site plans

slab or footing layout plans

stormwater layout plans.

Drawing protocolsmust include:

abbreviations

commonly used symbols

dimensioning

drawing titles

hatched regions

legends

lettering standards

line types

numbering

paper size

scale

schedules

standard units of measurement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must use two different types of two-dimensional (2-D) computer-aided design (CAD) software according to manufacturer specifications and organisational standards to produce at least five different types of 2-D building design drawings selected from the following:

bracing plan

electrical power and lighting plan

floor framing plan

floor plan

house drainage plan (sewerage)

lot plan

roof drainage plan

roof framing plan

site plan

slab or footing layout plan

stormwater layout plan.

In doing the above, the person must:

identify and apply drawing standards and protocols

identify and apply styles, characteristics, technologies and decorative styles

demonstrate sound understanding of the structural function of building elements

import and export information

use range of 2-D CAD functions.

Knowledge Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

architectural styles and terminology that apply to the building design drawings specified in the performance evidence

building materials used in building design projects, and their representation in drawings

structural systems used in building design projects and the structural function of building elements

drafting and drawing standards and protocols, including:

AS 1100.101 Technical drawing – General principles

AS 1100.301 Technical drawing – Architectural drawing

construction technology relating to building design projects

functions and operation of 2-D CAD software programs

general work health and safety (WHS) principles and responsibilities that apply to the production of 2-D CAD drawings

hard copy and digital file management procedures

types and uses of architectural drawings.
