Proactive strategiesmust include at least four of the following:

positive reinforcement of resident decisions to adopt sustainability practices

use of community groups.

Follow-up services must include at least three of the following:

collation and analysis of data on residents’ adoption of home sustainability practices

constructive feedback and reinforcement of positive home sustainability practices

provision of information on changes and innovations in home sustainability practices, technologies, funding and support programs

tactics to deal with relapse in less sustainable practices.


Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also apply behaviour change principles and approaches in assisting three different clients to establish a plan for adopting home sustainability practices, and when monitoring and reviewing their progress.

In doing the above, the person must:

assess residents’ readiness to adopt home sustainability practices

develop an implementation plan

provide follow-up services, including monitoring and reviewing the plan

apply effective communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with residents.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

factors that increase likelihood of voluntary behaviour change

barriers to voluntary behaviour change

models of behaviour change

strategies to promote behaviour change

stages of change

strategies for dealing with relapse in sustainable practices

consultation models and approaches

home sustainability:

purpose of home sustainability assessments

barriers to adopting home sustainability practices

data, data collection methods, and success measures relating to resident adoption of home sustainability practices

factors that increase likelihood of voluntary adoption of home sustainability practices

home sustainability practices:

energy use and management

thermal performance

waste minimisation and management

water use and management

relationship between household energy, water and waste use, and greenhouse gases and emissions

personal and environmental factors that impact on residents’ adoption of home sustainability practices
