Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to monitor contained waste.
   • Work requirements are identified according to waste type and length of storage, and organisational and compliance requirements.
   • Monitoring equipment is selected and obtained according to organisational and work requirements.
   • Hazards and risks identified and managed or reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.
   • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected, checked and used according to work, organisational and compliance requirements.
2. Check waste containment.
   • Integrity of waste containment is checked and non-conformances are managed or reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.
   • Stocktake of waste is conducted to confirm recorded stock levels.
   • Testing of waste containment is organised according to manufacturer specifications and organisational and compliance requirements.
3. Check storage facility and report monitoring activities.
   • Waste storage facility is checked to ensure no contamination in the area, and problems are resolved or reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.
   • Storage facility is secured to prevent unauthorised access according to organisational and compliance requirements.
   • Testing of waste storage facility is organised according to organisational requirements.
   • Report of contained waste monitoring is completed promptly and according to organisational requirements.

Work requirementsmust include:	checks for integrity of containment compliance with legislative requirements sampling security of storage facility and testing.

Checked must include checking for at least four of the following:	contamination decomposing drum expansion gases leaching or leaks spillage unstable form.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also monitor waste containment and storage for two different tasks.

While monitoring contained waste, the person must:

follow organisational procedures to work safely and comply with regulatory and legal requirements

conduct a stocktake of contained waste to confirm recorded stock levels

document the details of contained waste monitoring activities using organisational proformas

identify waste types and waste characteristics including hazardous and dangerous waste, non-conforming waste and reusable or recyclable waste

identify and report problems with the waste containment

organise testing of the waste storage facility and conduct checks of the facility to ensure there is no contamination and appropriate security

select, obtain and use waste monitoring equipment to sample and test waste containment.
