Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan waste management information provision.
   • Research is conducted to identify waste management information requirements in consultation with relevant personnel.
   • Waste management information and education target groups are identified according to organisational requirements.
   • Waste management information session is planned and documented according to organisational requirements.
2. Provide waste management information to clients.
   • Waste management information is checked to ensure it provides client with practical options for managing and minimising waste.
   • Waste management information is delivered in a clear and concise manner, and opportunities are provided for client to confirm and clarify understanding.
   • Client is provided with suitable documentation and reference materials to meet information requirements.
3. Assist clients to access additional information.
   • Client is provided with sources of additional information to meet ongoing waste management information requirements.
   • Information on organisations and waste management services are provided to meet client information requirements.

Research must include:	identifying changes in waste management services identifying new waste management trends and issues reviewing records of client compliance levels reviewing records of common client enquiries.
Relevant personnel must include at least two of the following:	clients managers or supervisors other stakeholders staff.
Compliance requirements must include:	commonwealth, state and territory legislation relating to educating clients on waste management, including: environmental protection hazardous substances and dangerous goods industry codes work health and safety licensing requirements.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must plan, document and present waste management information to clients on two separate occasions.

While educating clients on waste management, the person must:

conduct research to identify current waste management information and issues, and plan waste management information provision to selected target client groups

match waste management information provision to identified client education needs

present waste management information clearly and concisely using active listening and questioning strategies

use presentation techniques which summarise key points and focus on key messages

use a computer to document waste management information

collate and disseminate appropriate industry information to assist clients to source required waste management information

follow organisational procedures and comply with regulatory and legal requirements.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

environmental issues relating to life cycle of products and renewable energy

hazards and risks associated with waste management including hazardous substances and dangerous goods

licensing issues in waste management

organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to educating clients on waste management

range of services provided by waste management organisations

waste containment methods

waste disposal and recovery methods

waste types, streams, characteristics and non-conformances.
