Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to construct costume components
   • Identify costume components, their functionality and relationship to the entire costume requirements, in consultation with relevant personnel
   • Confirm costume specifications and production schedule
   • Select construction techniques appropriate to costumes, fabrics and functionality
   • Plan sequence of operations for constructing components
   • Select and prepare machinery and equipment
2. Produce a range of costume components
   • Follow planned sequence of construction operations and seek assistance from others as required
   • 2.2 Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures and manufacturer's specifications when using sewing and cutting machinery
   • Handle different combinations of fabrics and notions during the construction process
   • Use a range of costume construction techniques to produce sample components that meet quality and functional requirements
   • Seek feedback on samples from relevant personnel and agree on modifications or improvements
   • Finish costume components within agreed timeframes
3. Document costume construction techniques
   • Compile work samples showing development of techniques and components
   • Document techniques and methods for future reference
   • Produce a reference portfolio which includes completed components and notes on the sequence of operations
   • Reflect on process of constructing components and note areas for future improvement

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

determine the most efficient way to construct costume components to meet functional and production requirements

develop and follow a sequence of operations for constructing a variety of costume components

use a sewing machine competently and safely

sew and finish costume components that meet functional requirements and costume production deadlines

document the process of constructing costume components.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify sources of supply for materials typically required for construction of costume components

outline roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in costume design and construction
