Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Construct patterns for costume corsets and undergarments
   • Discuss and confirm corsetry and undergarment requirements with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation and timelines
   • Take body measurements required for pattern construction
   • Calculate and record measurements required for construction according to enterprise procedures
   • Use taken and calculated measurements to construct corset and undergarment patterns
   • Test toiles for patterns and make adjustments to fit or proportioning
   • Transfer adjustments to construction of patterns
   • Make final patterns, write cutting instructions and label patterns
2. Lay up and cut corsets and undergarments
   • Estimate meterage of fabric required in accordance with final patterns
   • Lay fabric and place patterns according to cutting instructions
   • Cut materials safely to meet pattern requirements
   • Transfer notches and balance points from patterns to fabrics
3. Finalise corsets and undergarments
   • Determine components required in consultation with relevant personnel
   • Pin or sew fabric pieces and components using a systematic sequence of operations
   • Fit corsets or undergarments during assembly and make adjustments and alterations to meet performers’ requirements and construction specifications
   • Use appropriate techniques and equipment to safely sew fabric and component pieces together to form undergarments
   • Label finished corsets and undergarments according to requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

construct corsetry and undergarment patterns using taken and calculated measurements

sew, fit and finish a range of corsetry and undergarments that meet production requirements

work collaboratively with production personnel and performers to produce required garment within production deadlines.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in making costumes

describe characteristics of fabrics used to construct corsetry and undergarments

explain principles and techniques of corsetry and undergarment construction and fitting

describe techniques for making alterations to patterns after fittings

outline the process for testing patterns in toile form before finalising them

identify typical problems that arise in the context of constructing costume corsetry and undergarments and briefly describe solutions

describe safety procedures that apply to using equipment and materials to make corsetry and undergarments.
