Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Develop technical expertise
   • Under the guidance of a teacher, perform stretching exercises
   • Perform exercises to develop expertise in a range of jazz dance techniques and styles
   • Practise using arm lines appropriately
   • Show control in turning balances
2. Practise isolation exercises
   • Identify the purpose and application of isolation exercises
   • Work within own physical limits and demonstrate safe dance practices
   • Perform exercises focusing on different parts of the body in isolation
   • Incorporate a sense of timing and rhythm into exercises
   • Perform warm-down exercises after dance activity
3. Perform dance progressions
   • In consultation with others, agree on progressions that include a range of techniques suitable to own technical ability
   • Communicate the mood or style of progressions to audiences
   • Maintain correct posture, alignment, control and safe dance practices at all times
   • End the dance progression in an appropriate way
4. Review performance
   • Evaluate own performance in context of skill development needs
   • Use feedback from others to identify and develop ways to improve own dance technique
   • Set realistic goals for improvement and develop strategies to achieve them

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

perform technical and isolation exercises

perform two dance progressions that demonstrate a mastery of foundation jazz dance techniques

respond to constructive feedback on own performance.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain why the following aspects of safe dance practices are important:

warm-up and warm-down activities

correct clothing and footwear

healthy nutrition and diet

describe the key features of jazz styles and music tempos associated with them.
