Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan implementation of lighting designs
   • Analyse lighting designs and production schedules to determine overall lighting requirements
   • In consultation with relevant personnel, identify factors to be taken into account when planning the implementation of lighting designs
   • Where possible, incorporate into the planning process new developments in lighting technology and innovative approaches to producing lighting effects
   • Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on the realisation of lighting designs
   • Reach agreement on evaluation methods for monitoring progress
   • Develop and document, in an agreed format, a work plan for realising lighting designs
2. Organise resources
   • Develop realistic expenditure estimates that conform to budget allocations
   • Hire or purchase required resources according to organisational procedures
   • Identify potential budget overruns and resolve or recommend alternatives to relevant personnel
   • Organise crew in line with industry award guidelines
   • Organise the services of licensed personnel as required
3. Supervise pre-production lighting operations
   • Brief crew members on work plans and allocate responsibilities
   • Lead focussing and plotting sessions and monitor progress on meeting lighting design requirements
   • Supervise the safe bump in of lighting department
   • Identify and respond to problems promptly in consultation with relevant personnel
   • Implement contingency plans as required to ensure that production deadlines are met
   • Update and distribute workplace documentation promptly
   • Supervise lighting operations during technical rehearsals and make adjustments and backups as required prior to live performances
4. Supervise production and post-production lighting operations
   • Monitor lighting operations and take appropriate action to resolve problems that arise
   • Supervise scheduled maintenance of lighting equipment and accessories
   • Maintain communication with key production personnel at all times
   • Supervise the safe bump out of lighting department
   • Involve crew members in evaluations of lighting operations and modify procedures as required
   • Contribute to evaluations of productions and implement recommendations aimed at improving overall effectiveness of lighting operations

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

plan and supervise the implementation of lighting designs for at least one production or event

apply effective problem-solving techniques to the realisation of lighting designs

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

suggest ways to address issues and challenges that typically arise when realising lighting designs

explain safety issues to be taken into account when installing and operating lighting for productions and events

describe industry trends and developments that impact on lighting operations

provide examples of where to source a range of lighting equipment and accessories

provide examples of how to use lighting design specifications to realise a range of lighting effects

explain how a range of lighting equipment and accessories can be used to achieve different lighting effects.
