Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan lighting for outdoor events
   • Determine lighting requirements in consultation with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation
   • Review regulations that affect the design of outdoor lighting systems, with particular reference to environmental and insurance requirements
   • Assess venues or sites to identify availability of power and other issues to be considered when setting up outdoor lighting systems, and plan for contingencies
   • Do a job safety analysis of tasks and incorporate health and safety considerations into overall planning
   • Develop schedules of outdoor lighting system requirements, with specific reference to additional infrastructure and equipment requirements
   • Reach agreement on final configuration of outdoor lighting systems, allowing adequate time for installation and testing prior to events
2. Install lighting systems for outdoor events
   • Complete checks to ensure availability of all resources prior to installation
   • Supervise the connection of control systems
   • Monitor progress of lighting system installation against work plans and implement contingency plans as required to ensure that production deadlines are met
   • Ensure that all work activities comply with health and safety and industry award guidelines
   • Progressively test aspects of lighting system installation to check that required lighting effects can be achieved
   • Use the services of licensed personnel to complete specialised work as required
   • Liaise with relevant personnel during installation to ensure efficiency of installation and maximum cooperation
   • Review finished installation with relevant personnel and make adjustments as required
3. Monitor outdoor lighting operations
   • Monitor weather and overall quality of lighting and take action to rectify problems
   • Communicate with colleagues during operation to share information and ensure quality of productions
   • In consultation with relevant personnel, evaluate effectiveness of outdoor lighting operations and note areas for future improvement

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

develop specifications for lighting systems that meet production requirements in an outdoor setting on at least two occasions

manage the installation and operation of lighting operations for outdoor events on at least two occasions

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain how a range of lighting equipment and accessories can be used to achieve different lighting effects

provide examples of work health and safety issues and hazards associated with operating lighting equipment outdoors, and suggest ways of responding to them

explain legal, regulatory and environmental issues that impact on operating lighting in outdoor venues

explain the impact of different types of outdoor sites on electricity provision

provide examples of issues and challenges that typically arise when managing lighting operations for outdoor events, along with strategies for addressing them.
