Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Practise notated music
   • Discuss the selection of repertoire suitable for practice and performance with appropriate people
   • Analyse the musical conventions for chord sequences and music systems, rhythms, time signatures and beat patterns relevant to own instrument or voice
   • Practise reading music with accurate realisation of rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas according to own instrument or voice
   • Adhere to the required conventions of form and music structures
   • Interpret dynamics and expression marks
   • Practise accuracy of intonation
   • Apply knowledge of style and genre to playing or singing own pieces/songs
   • Seek guidance from appropriate personnel, and adjust techniques as required
2. Present performances of notated music
   • Perform melodic and rhythmic structures of music accurately
   • Perform harmonic structures where required
   • Demonstrate appropriate stylistic conventions
   • Apply suitable tuning for selected music as required
   • Listen critically, and adjust own performance in the context of a group performance as required
   • Recognise any errors in performance, and mitigate appropriately to ensure continuity of performance
   • Observe work health and safety (WHS) principles relevant to reading music and performing
3. Enhance music reading skills
   • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in music reading to inform practice goals
   • Explore suitable repertoire for further development of reading skills in consultation with appropriate people

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

practise music-reading skills on a regular basis

perform music from written notation on at least three occasions, following the conventions of the selected music, and adjusting own performance, as required

identify ways to enhance music reading skills.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain conventions of written music notation and how they are used in performance

describe a range of genres and styles, and their musical forms and conventions, in written notation

describe ways to improve interpretation of notated music and music reading skills

outline issues and challenges that arise in the context of performing music from written notation, and describe how they might be addressed.
