Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Establish work space requirements
   • Review and analyse relevant information to determine work space and plan requirements
   • Consult users of the space and other relevant stakeholders to clarify requirements about its usage
   • Analyse potential usage patterns to determine specific requirements and constraints
2. Develop design concept for work space
   • Assess physical characteristics of the space in relation to its capacity to meet requirements
   • Assess safety and sustainability issues that impact on the organisation of space
   • Establish criteria for allocating space based onkey objectives
   • Allocate space within design according to agreed criteria
   • Identify, negotiate and resolve conflicting demands for space according to criteria
   • Evaluate and document requirements for fixtures and fittings
3. Create plans for work space
   • Develop plans in an appropriate format and within required timeframes and budget
   • Include complete and accurate supporting information that will facilitate creating the space
   • Check and finalise plans prior to implementation

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

research and consult in order to determine key requirements and usage of work space

assess characteristics and issues that impact on work space

develop a design concept that suits available space, addresses work requirements, integrates safety and sustainability considerations, and includes details of fixtures and fittings

create a work space plan within required timeframe and budget that meets identified objectives.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the context in which the space is to be used, processes for meeting user group requirements, and commercial considerations associated with that context

summarise options for planning of space, including advantages and disadvantages of different approaches

describe the key features of annotated floor plans, computer drawings and sketches used when developing work space plans

outline sustainability considerations relating to the work space, including waste

explain work health and safety requirements relating to the use of space within the specific industry context, including requirements associated with specific equipment.
