Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Maintain and care for self as a performer
   • Use appropriate methods to maintain optimum physical fitness
   • Identify risk factors that may inhibit the achievement of goals and seek professional advice as required
   • Take fatigue and personal limitations into account when undertaking physical exercise and performances
   • Perform warm-up and warm-down procedures in conjunction with performance activities
   • Ensure that clothing and footwear are appropriate for exercise regime and practising performance technique
2. Analyse performance techniques
   • Discuss the principles and techniques with relevant personnel
   • Identify a range of basic approaches to techniques
   • Apply kinaesthetic awareness to techniques
   • Take account of a range of ways in which techniques can be used to create simple sequences
   • Compare own work to other performances to identify innovative ways of using techniques
3. Perform simple sequences or pieces
   • Use principles and characteristics of chosen technique to perform simple sequences or pieces
   • Use a range of physical and vocal approaches when performing simple sequences or pieces
   • Use feedback from others to identify and develop ways to improve own performance

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

demonstrate skills in performance practice and chosen technique

discuss and evaluate opportunities to inform and develop technical skills

experiment with new ideas in making and interpreting performance work

critically analyse own performance.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

in relation to chosen performance genre, demonstrate basic knowledge of:

major theorists or exponents of the genre

historical, theoretical and cultural perspectives and conventions

naturalistic and non-naturalistic performance styles

describe how the following apply to performers:

copyright, moral rights and intellectual property issues

health and safety

breath and techniques for the release of tension

body alignment

kinaesthetic awareness

the effect vocal techniques and characteristics have on audiences.
